Our treaty with China and Jingjing

What is China for you? They say it will be the superpower in the next future, over the United States. One example: it is almost common seeing Chinese astronauts in orbit now. Very soon they will walk on the Moon. Good merchandises arrive here from that distant land flooding our markets. On the other hand, they buy generously our cooper as the result of the new Agreement of Free Trade between our two countries.

Chile grows being friends of great nations. But, for me China is not a giant or the most important destiny of our products. For me, China is a 25 years old young lady, a girl living in Beijing who goes to her office biking every day and to whom I maintain frequent e-mailing exchanges.

I met Jingjing in Santiago. Because of her fine presence and smooth smile, she reminded me the idea that a lady like this was the Bowie’s inspiration to create his famous song of the eighties “China Girl”. I told her that, but she never had listened to it. My interaction with this Chinese girl was exact 4 minutes, enough time, however to establish a sympathetic friendship and to compromise a communication through internet, what happens now a day.

Jingjing struggles to take roots in Beijing, because she comes from a distant province in the north. She moved alone to study and stay in the capital. Her parents live in a city far away: 15 hours by train. She is a warm and a loving person, belonging to a new generation of Chinese people more technological and futurists than before. Jingjing works hard, studies, writes and dreams of improving herself and having a family soon. That is China for me.

NUESTRO TRATADO CON CHINA Y JINGJING

¿Qué es China para usted? Dicen que será la superpotencia del futuro próximo, sobre Estados Unidos. Ya es común ver astronautas chinos en órbita terrestre. Muy pronto caminarán en la Luna. Productos de calidad que provienen de ese país, inundan nuestros mercados y a cambio nos compran cobre a manos llenas, fruto del nuevo tratado de libre comercio.

Chile se agranda siendo amigo de los grandes. Pero, para mí China no es un gigante o el destino más importante de nuestros productos. Para mí, la esencia de China es una joven de 25 años que vive en Beijing; una chica que va y vuelve de su trabajo conduciendo una bicicleta y con quien sostengo periódico intercambio de mails.

Conocí a Jingjing en Santiago. Por su apariencia fina y su sonrisa, pensé que una chica parecida fue la idea inspiradora de Bowie para su clásica canción setentera “China girl”. Se lo dije, pero ella no la había oído jamás. Nuestra interacción fue de cuatro minutos exactos, tiempo suficiente sin embargo, para entablar amistad y comprometer una comunicación por Internet, lo que ocurre hasta hoy.

Jingjing se esfuerza por echar raíces en Beijing, porque proviene de una provincia del norte, distante 15 horas en tren de la capital. Viajó sola a estudiar y con la idea de quedarse. Sus padres permanecen su pueblo natal. Ella es una persona cálida y afectuosa perteneciente a esta nueva generación de chinos más tecnológicos y futuristas. Jingjing trabaja duro, estudia, escribe y sueña con superarse y formar pronto una familia. Eso es China para mí.
