25 años esperando una reparación

El terremoto se produjo el 3 de marzo de 1985. Un cuarto de siglo más tarde, la hermosa basílica del Salvador, ubicada en la esquina de Almirante Barroso y Agustinas en Santiago, gravemente dañada entonces, sigue en pie, herida de muerte. Veinticinco años de agonía es demasiado, aún para un edificio.

La basílica, de un claro estilo gótico, es desde entonces más gótica que nunca. Porque le pusieron unos feos postes exteriores, que funcionan como los arbotantes de la catedral de Notre Dame de París. Sin esos soportes de madera, que además inutilizaron la vereda oriente de A. Barroso, se vendría al suelo.

En su fachada luce un letrero municipal que agradece los aportes para evitar los riesgos. O sea, mantenerla cercada, hasta que se caiga y no mate a nadie. Nuestra basílica herida está a menos de un kilómetro de la Municipalidad.

En la quietud de la noche otro recinto de oración se desplomó esta semana. La añosa iglesia de Matilla, un pintoresco oasis cerca de Pica, al interior de Iquique, en pleno desierto de Atacama, se vino al suelo con el viento. ¿Esperaremos a que aquí pase eso mismo?

Demuélanla, reconstrúyanla o hagan algo, pero no la abandonen. Da vergüenza.

25 years waiting for a reparation

The earthquake happened March the 3rd in 1985. A quarter of century since that, the beautiful El Salvador basilica, at the corner of the streets Almirante Barroso and Agustinas in downtown Santiago, seriously damaged since then, remains on its feet, deadly wounded. Twenty five years of agony is too much, even for a building.

The basilica, clearly gothic style, is now more gothic than ever. Because they put those ugly poles outside, that works like flying buttress, copying those structures of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Without them, the basilica would fall to pieces.

In its front you can see and adviser board saying that Santiago city hall thanks to those that gave money to build the defenses to avoid people’s risks. That means to maintain the basilica fenced until it falls alone killing nobody. Our hurt basilica is located less than one kilometer from the city hall.

In the heat of the night another church fell down. It happened this week in Matilla, in the Atacama Desert, near Iquique. That church collapsed by the effect of the wind. Are we waiting the same here?

Demolish it, rebuild it, but do something, not abandon it. What a shame!
