Una generación completa de chilenos ─jóvenes de hasta unos 22 años─ no tienen idea de terremotos. Cuando más, se habrán despertado alguna noche mecidos suavemente por un temblor leve y después a continuar durmiendo. Nada más.
En cambio la memoria histórica nos habla de un pasado trágicamente zamarreado. Los chillanejos mayores recuerdan que la noche del 24 de enero de 1939, la sangre corría por las calles entre los escombros, a raíz de aquel destructor terremoto. Los cadáveres se enterraban en tierra bruta a la espera de trasladarlos a los cementerios.
Escuché ayer una conferencia del director de la ONEMI, el doctor Alberto Maturana, quien se refirió a este aspecto, aunque pocos periodistas, todos muy jóvenes, repararon en el contenido de su exposición. Él habló de terremotos. Nos recordó que los sismos del 21 y 22 de mayo de 1960 liberaron el 33 por ciento de la energía de todos los terremotos registrados en el siglo XX. Somos un país top en este campo.
Pero, como decía, hay una generación sin registros. Ellos no tienen esa experiencia en el disco duro. Lo malo es que un terremoto vendrá, no sabemos cuándo ni con qué violencia.
Le pregunté al doctor Maturana si él sabía algo, si tenía alguna pista. No hay nada, no disponemos de ningún dato que nos permita predecir la proximidad de un sismo, fue su respuesta. ¿Y si el fenómeno viene de qué vale anunciarlo? Basta con ver lo que ocurrió con el huracán Katrina en Nueva Orleáns. Todos sabían que venía, lo mostraba la televisión, e igualmente causó lo que causó.

A complete generation of Chileans has no idea about earthquakes. The only thing they have experienced is a very slow movement in the middle of the night. That’s it.
But our historical memory speaks about a tragic past. Old people of Chillan remember that January 24th 1939 night, with those rivers of blood in the streets after that horrible tremor. Corpses were buried across de field waiting for being moved to cemeteries.
Yesterday I attended a lecture of Dr. Alberto Maturana, the director of ONEMI. He talked about earthquakes. He remembered us those strong quakes occurred in May the 21st and the 22nd in 19960 delivered the 33% of the total energy delivered by quakes during the XX century. So, we are a top country in that field.
But, as I said, there is a generation without registers. They don’t have such experience in their hard disk. The bad news is a new earthquake will come and we don’t know when.
I asked Dr. Maturana if he knew something, if he had a hint. We have no data that permits us to anticipate, was his answer. But if we were able to know, would it help? You have to look at what happened in New Orleans. All of us knew that Katrina was in her way. Television showed it and the destruction occurred likewise.
